Sherman Swafford was born in Welch, West Virginia, and is the son of person with a physical disability. Sherman currently serves as a Client Advocate with SNFA. His academic background and work history include a Bachelors Degree in History from West Virginia University, and over fifteen years of experience working with persons with disabilities. Sherman served in the United States Army as an Armored Tank Crewman before beginning his career as a social worker.
He began his career in the disabilities field as a job coach for Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs. This job included working directly with persons with developmental disabilities and providing them with on the job training in a community setting. His next job was as a job coach and mental health therapist for Pikes Peak Mental Health Center. Primary duties of this position included serving as a primary therapist for persons with Chronic Mental Illness, who also held community jobs. He also provided long-term on the job support to the same group of clients. Sherman also worked for The Resource Exchange (TRE), the Community Centered Board (CCB) for El Paso, Park, and Teller counties. TRE serves as the primary funding source for persons with developmental disabilities in the previously mentioned counties. Sherman held several positions with TRE over a ten-year period. He served as an Early Intervention Specialist working with children age birth through three with developmental disabilities. He also served as a Resource Coordinator/ Case Manager for adults with developmental disabilities. His final position with TRE was as the Director of Resource Coordination, providing supervision to TREs case management staff. Sherman is currently the Executive Director of Community Link, Inc. an agency that provides residential and day program services to adults with developmental disabilities.
